This September, YDS brings two of Canada’s best acoustic artists to the stage for midday concerts, and welcomes an award-winning Cuban-Canadian with a funky ‘fro, vintage Gibson guitar, serious talent and a taste for multi-cultural fusion. Add in shopping, TIFF and fun, free community events, and you’ve got some excellent reasons to head down to YDS and do it in public! SERENADES IN THE SQUARE September 17 – October 15, 12:30-1:30pm, Free Admission Summer swings to a close with SERENADES IN THE SQUARE, free lunchtime concerts featuring some of Canada’s best jazz, folk and roots artists. Wed. Sept 17 Justin Hines He’s been compared to some of the very best acoustic artists from the ‘70s, including James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce and Nick Drake, and modern-day troubadours including Ron Sexsmith, Damien Rice and Hayden. Singer/songwriter Justin Hines marries emotionally eloquent lyrics to strong melodies, creating intimate, soul-bearing songs. His lovely, unforgettable single, Wish You Well, was featured in the "Walk For Miracles" Wal-Mart ads. Wed. Sept 24 Peter Elkas This talented singer/songwriter/musician is garnering critical and public acclaim for his romantic, soulful music and masterful musicianship. An accomplished artist with a strong sense of musicality, Elkas’ music combines elements of soul, folk and rock. No wonder he cites Bill Withers, Bruce Springsteen, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield, Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, Led Zeppelin among his eclectic group of musical influences. Citytv and OMNI Television present MONDO MUZIKO A-GO-GO! Fridays, June 27 – September 19, 8-10 pm, Free Admission MONDO MUZIKO A-GO-GO, our free Friday night concert series, comes to a caliente close with a multi-award-winning artist. Friday, SEPTEMBER 19 ALEX CUBA Alex Cuba is an artist who’s garnering serious attention from audiences and the media alike! His music is influenced by both his homeland Cuba and his adopted home Canada, along with the many places and people he’s encountered along the way. The result? A fusion of Cuban-tinged folk-pop, soul, funk, jazz and rock that has critics singing his praises. How hot is Alex Cuba? This year alone, he was named Favourite World Music Artist at Canadian Music Week, picked up his second Juno Award for Best World Music album, delivered a rousing showcase at SXSW, rocked the house at NXNE, and racked up sell-out tours in the U.S. Experience what everyone’s buzzing about!
