COC COMMISSIONS NEW FULL-LENGTH OPERA BY
JAMES ROLFE AND ANNA CHATTERTON

Toronto – The Canadian Opera Company is thrilled to announce the commission of a new full-length opera by celebrated Canadian composer James Rolfe and librettist Anna Chatterton.

The working title is Donna and this English-language opera is intended to be performed during the 2011/12 mainstage season. Originally commissioned by the late Richard Bradshaw, the opera will be written, composed and workshopped over the next four years.

Donna is a contemporary Don Giovanni, set in a 21st-century metropolis. It is the dark tale of a passionate and charismatic heroine whose voracious appetite for both men and women culminates in a tragic finale.

Collaborating most recently on last season’s critically acclaimed, world premiere COC Ensemble Studio production of Swoon, Mr. Rolfe and Ms Chatterton return to create this full-length opera.

Best known for the opera Beatrice Chancy, Mr. Rolfe’s works have been commissioned and performed by ensembles in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and New Zealand. Ms Chatterton is an award-winning playwright whose plays have been produced across Canada. She has worked as a librettist with the Canadian Opera Company, Tapestry New Opera Works, Pacific Opera, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Harbourfront’s World Stage Festival and the Theatre Centre.
