Frenergy, The Music of John Estacio,
CBC Records, SMCD 5232, 72:38 minutes

When you call a CD Frenergy, your music better lives up to the title that makes one visualize turbulent energy along the lines of a Khatchaturian Sabre Dance. In the case of composer John Estacio, who hails from Newmarket, ON, but spent many of his more recent creative years in Edmonton, he certainly does. His music is energetic, it is frenetic, and it is very exciting to hear. His music, performed by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, for which he was composer-in-residence for many years, captures the spirit of what he wants to express.

The first piece on this CBC Records CD is actually titled Frenergy, a word he created to combine frantic and energy. It is full of verve and filled with melodic ideas, which carry the piece and the listener along. It is just five minutes long, but that is enough to capture one's attention and interest for the next piece. It is called a Farmer's Symphony.
